With more than 30 years of phlebotomy experience under his belt, Steve Madrid continued to encounter the same problem: organizing and maintaining tools and supplies necessary to do his job. After dropping his phlebotomy tray twice, on two separate occasions in the same facility, in the early morning hours — in the most challenging nursing home he had on contract — and struggling to maintain his composure while he was on his hands and knees trying to gather all his tools and get them back onto his tray, he was compelled to find a better solution that would help phlebotomists everywhere keep his tools organized while on rounds with patients. A long journey emerged full of hard work, trial and error, and from this came the Lab Buggy.
Lab Buggy was awarded a utility patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office in January of 2021. It is an ultra lightweight, collapsible, self-contained phlebotomy and medical workstation. The Lab Buggy is able to stand up on its own, lean forward, lock into its working position, provide all tools and supplies at the ready, and collapse on its own. It rolls ergonomically on quiet running wheels behind you as you make your rounds. It is designed to make direct patient contact for frontline medical personnel safer, faster, easier, and more fun to make your rounds. The Lab Buggy helps to ensure that you don’t have any tray dropping at 3 o’clock in the morning!
